Public transportation

Public transport in Crete – buses, routes & timetables

The public transport network in Crete is relatively simple and inexpensive:
There are no trains, but there is a well-developed island-wide bus network operated by the regional bus companies of the KTEL association.

Main provider: KTEL buses

KTEL buses connect almost all major towns and tourist destinations on the island. These include:

  • Large cities: Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos
  • Airports and ferry ports
  • Popular beaches and excursion destinations (e.g., Malia, Hersonissos, Matala)
  • Mountain villages and hiking regions (some with less frequent service)

The buses are comfortable, air-conditioned, and very popular with tourists, especially in the high season between spring and fall.

Important bus routes & examples

North coast – regions & connections

  • Heraklion ↔ Chania (via Rethymno): hourly or frequent connections between the major cities
  • Heraklion ↔ Rethymno: regular service during the day
  • Heraklion ↔ Agios Nikolaos ↔ Ierapetra / Sitia: in the east with many stops
  • Heraklion ↔ Hersonissos / Malia: very frequent short-distance connections

Popular destinations from the bus network

  • Heraklion → Knossos: easily accessible with short connections
  • Heraklion → Matala: 2–3 connections daily
  • Chania → Omalos / Samaria Gorge: usually an early morning trip for hikers

Tip: Within large cities (e.g. Heraklion or Chania), there are often city buses for short distances – for example, from the airport to the city centre or to the bus station.

Timetables & routes – official links

KTEL timetables (regional and seasonal timetables)

These official websites offer overviews in German or English, often in PDF format or as interactive routes:

Many KTEL bus lines publish PDF timetables that you can download or print out (e.g. for Heraklion, Chania or Eastern Crete).

Tips for use

Tickets & boarding

• You can buy tickets directly on the bus, at the bus station or sometimes online.
• There are usually no day passes, only single tickets for each route.

Seasonal differences

• Summer (May–October): more frequent connections, especially on tourist routes.
• Winter: reduced timetables, fewer buses to mountain villages or southern destinations.
