Ferry connections to and from Crete

Crete, Greece's largest island, is not only easily accessible by plane – ferry connections to Crete are also a popular, inexpensive and flexible alternative. Whether from Athens (Piraeus), the Cyclades or other islands – numerous ferries sail to Crete every day.

The most important ferry ports in Crete

Crete has four major ferry ports covering different regions of the island:

  • Heraklion – the largest ferry port in Crete, well connected to Athens (Piraeus), Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and many more.
  • Chania (port of Souda) – daily connections to Piraeus, particularly popular with travellers in western Crete.
  • Rethymnon – seasonal ferries to other islands, ideal for holidaymakers in central Crete.
  • Sitia – ferry connections to the Dodecanese islands and to Karpathos or Rhodes.

Departure ports from the mainland

Most travellers start their ferry journey to Crete from the port of Piraeus near Athens. Modern car ferries depart daily from here to Heraklion and Chania – mostly overnight.

Other ports of departure:

Rafina (near Athens) – smaller connections via the Cyclades

Thessaloniki – seasonal and longer ferry trips (not daily)

Tip: Book online early – especially in high season!

Island hopping by ferry

Crete is an ideal starting or ending point for island hopping in the Aegean Sea. Particularly popular:

  • Santorini – Crete: several times a day during the season
  • Mykonos – Crete: frequently via Santorini
  • Rhodes – Crete: via Karpathos or Sitia

Many ferry companies offer combination tickets and discounts for island hoppers.
