The climate on Crete

The Greek island of Crete is located in the Mediterranean climate zone and is known for its pleasant climate. Crete's climate is characterized by an exceptional amount of sunshine, making the island the sunniest in the Mediterranean alongside Cyprus.

In July, the hottest month, the sun pampers Crete for an average of 13 hours a day. Most of the precipitation falls during the winter months, and it can even snow in the higher elevations of the mountains. Spring and summer, on the other hand, are usually very dry. The average temperature rises to over 20 degrees Celsius as early as May.

In the south of the island in particular, the Crete climate can reach extreme temperatures of up to 45 degrees in midsummer, before gradually cooling down from September onwards. Despite the heat in summer, Crete remains spring-like even in winter thanks to the mild climate, making the island an attractive destination all year round.
