Frangokastello is a small village steeped in history on the south coast of the Greek island of Crete, about 12 kilometres east of Chora Sfakion and 70 kilometres south of Chania. The village is known for its impressive Venetian fortress, the beautiful beaches and the fascinating legends that surround it. Frangokastello offers visitors a unique blend of history, nature and traditional Cretan culture.
The centrepiece of Frangokastello is the fortress of the same name, which was built by the Venetians in the 14th century. The fortress was built to defend the coast against pirate attacks and to control the rebellious local population. The rectangular structure with its massive walls and striking towers is still well preserved today and offers an impressive sight.
The fortress has a rich history and has been the scene of many important events. In 1828, during the Greek War of Independence, the famous Battle of Frangokastello took place here, in which the Cretan freedom fighter Dalianis and his men fought against the Ottoman troops. Today, a memorial plaque commemorates these brave warriors.
One of the most fascinating legends associated with Frangokastello is that of the Drosoulites. Every year, on calm mornings at the end of May, the ghosts of the fallen warriors of the battle of 1828 are said to be seen moving across the plain in front of the fortress as shadowy figures. These apparitions, known as Drosoulites (Tau Warriors), have inspired many myths and stories and contribute to the mystical atmosphere of the place.
Frangokastello is not only known for its historic fortress, but also for its beautiful beaches. The main beach of Frangokastello, right next to the fortress, is a long sandy beach with crystal clear, shallow waters, ideal for families and children. The beach is well organised and offers sun loungers and umbrellas as well as several tavernas where you can enjoy traditional Cretan dishes.
There are other lesser-known beaches in the area, such as Orthi Ammos, which is famous for its high sand dunes. This beach is less crowded and offers a quieter alternative to the main beach.
The landscape around Frangokastello is characterised by the majestic Lefka Ori (White Mountains), which form a dramatic backdrop. Hiking trails lead through the mountains and along the coast, offering spectacular views of the Libyan Sea.
Frangokastello offers a variety of activities for visitors. As well as sunbathing and swimming on the beaches, holidaymakers can also go snorkelling and diving to explore the rich underwater world. Boat trips along the coast offer the opportunity to discover secluded bays and beaches.
For hiking enthusiasts, there are numerous routes in the area that lead through the impressive landscape. We particularly recommend a hike through the nearby Imbros Gorge, which is less well-known but just as beautiful as the more famous Samaria Gorge.
