Askifou Plateau

The Askifou Plain on Crete is an impressive high plateau located in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) in the west of the island. This picturesque area is not only scenic, but also rich in history and tradition. Here are some highlights and information about the Askifou Plain that travellers can discover during their visit.

The Askifou Plain lies at an altitude of around 750 metres above sea level and is surrounded by high mountain peaks. The plateau covers an area of around 45 square kilometres and is known for its fertile soils. The landscape is characterised by rolling hills, green meadows and dense forests. Numerous wildflowers bloom here in spring and summer, giving the plain a colourful and vibrant appearance.

The Askifou Plain is a favourite destination for hikers and nature lovers. There are several well-marked hiking trails that lead through the plain and the surrounding mountains. One of the most popular routes is the path to the Imbros Gorge, which is known for its impressive rock formations and spectacular scenery. This hike is less demanding than the Samaria Gorge and is therefore also suitable for families.

Mountain biking and bird watching are other popular activities in the Askifou Plain. The tranquil and remote surroundings provide an ideal setting to enjoy nature to the fullest.

The Askifou Plain has a rich history dating back to ancient times. During Venetian and Ottoman rule, the area was an important agricultural centre. Today, the plain is home to numerous traditional villages where the inhabitants maintain their culture and customs. The villages of Kares, Ammoudari, Goni and Petres are particularly worth a visit and offer an insight into authentic Cretan life.

A significant historical event associated with the Askifou plain is the Cretan resistance against the Ottoman occupation in the 19th century. Near Ammoudari is the War Museum of Askifou, which displays a collection of weapons and artefacts from various wars and documents the history of the Cretan resistance.

Traditional Cretan cuisine is omnipresent in the Askifou plain. The local tavernas offer a variety of dishes prepared from fresh, regional ingredients. Particularly noteworthy are the various cheeses, such as graviera and myzithra, which are made from the milk of the goats and sheep grazing on the plain. Other specialities include lamb dishes, wild vegetables and homemade bread. A visit to one of the local tavernas is not only a culinary delight, but also an opportunity to experience the famous Cretan hospitality.
