AGIOS NIKOLAOS – INSEL SPINALONGA

Agios Nikolaos is a charming coastal town in eastern Crete, known for its picturesque beauty and relaxed atmosphere. Located on the shores of the Gulf of Mirabello, the town offers a mix of modern amenities and traditional Cretan charm.

Agios Nikolaos has a long and varied history dating back to Minoan times. The town is named after St Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors, and is famous for its church of Agios Nikolaos, which dates back to the 7th century. The town is also home to the Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos, which displays an impressive collection of artefacts from the region.

One of the most important sights is Lake Voulismeni, a small, almost circular lake in the centre of the town, which is connected to the sea. According to legend, the lake is bottomless, but it is actually around 64 metres deep. The lake is surrounded by tavernas, cafés and shops and is a beautiful sight, especially at night when the lights of the town are reflected in the water.

The beaches around Agios Nikolaos are also a highlight. The beaches of Ammoudi, Kitroplatia and Almyros offer crystal-clear water and numerous water sports opportunities. A stroll along the picturesque harbour promenade and a visit to the weekly market are also recommended.
