Heraklion capital

Heraklion (also known as Iraklio or Iraklion) is the capital and largest city on Crete and is located on the north coast of the island. With over 170,000 inhabitants, the vibrant city forms the cultural, social and economic centre and is a popular tourist destination, as it offers its visitors many sights and attractions from ancient times to the present day. Heraklion is the fourth largest city (by population) and the largest non-mainland city in Greece.

One of Heraklion's most famous sights is the Archaeological Museum, where many impressive historical finds from the Minoan era can be seen - this era is considered by many scholars to be the birth of European culture. The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion houses the world's largest collection of artworks and artefacts from this period. It provides visitors with a comprehensive picture of the culture and history of Crete.

At the Historical Museum, which houses artifacts from the Christian era of the island, and at the Museum of Icons, historically and culturally interested visitors can marvel at many exhibits.

The charming old town of Heraklion offers a unique atmosphere: a stroll along the bustling main street with its numerous shops is an absolute must! Lion Square, the center of the old town, is a sight to behold. Here stands the Morosini Fountain, regarded as an impressive example of Hellenic craftsmanship. The old town is filled with countless tavernas and cafés, inviting you to relax and enjoy the vibrant surroundings.
