Arrival & Transport

The island has two international airports: Heraklion (HER) and Chania (CHQ). There are direct flights from many German cities - especially in the high season from April to October.

 

A hire car is highly recommended for round trips, remote beaches or mountain villages. Bus travel is also possible in the cities - the network is well developed.

 

Yes, KTEL buses run regularly, especially between Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno and Agios Nikolaos. However, the frequency is lower in more remote regions.

 

Accommodation & travelling time

The ideal time is May to June and September to mid-October - pleasantly warm, but not too hot. July and August are high season with temperatures above 35 °C.

 

From small family hotels to luxurious villas with sea views, everything is possible. Holiday flats in traditional villages are also particularly popular.

 

Food & Drink

Typical dishes are:

  • Dakos (Cretan bread salad),
  • Lamb with stamnagathi,
  • Kalitsounia (small cheese or herb cakes),
  • Raki as a digestif - preferably home-made.

In cities like Heraklion or Chania, yes. In rural areas, bottled water is recommended.

 

Language & Culture

English is spoken well in tourist regions, often also a little German. However, a few Greek words are appreciated!

 

Yes - for example:

  • Greeting with a friendly ‘Jassas’ (hello),
  • Respect for older people,
  • Clothing in churches: cover shoulders & knees.

Health & Safety

No, no special vaccinations are required to enter Greece. However, international health insurance is advisable.

 

Crete is considered a very safe holiday destination. Petty crime is rare. Nevertheless, the same applies as everywhere else: do not leave valuables unattended.

Nature, animals & environment

Mediterranean: mild winters, hot summers. There can even be snow in the mountains in winter. Bathing weather from May onwards.

 

They are mostly harmless, but do not touch or feed them (unless authorised). Many are chipped and are looked after by clubs.

 

Miscellaneous

Not necessarily. Prices vary greatly depending on the season and region. In the east (e.g. Sitia) it is often cheaper than in the west (e.g. Chania).
