Cretan diet

Don't be confused by the name: This is not a diet in the true sense of the word. But what has become known as the "Crete diet" is an interesting and healthy alternative to existing diets - as a balanced mixed diet and permanent nutrition. What is so special about it?

The Mediterranean diet differs from the diet in many other (industrialised) countries in that it is mainly vegetarian: In southern European countries, people usually eat less meat, eggs and dairy products - and therefore less saturated fat. Instead, the diet there contains a lot of fruit, vegetables, salad and cereal products. Instead of meat, people in Mediterranean countries usually prefer to eat fish. The most important source of fat is without doubt olive oil.

Ever since the results of the "Seven Countries Study" by American nutritionist Ancel Keys in the 1950s and 1960s, the diet on Crete has been considered to be extremely beneficial to health, with people there having one of the highest life expectancies and rarely suffering from cardiovascular diseases. At the time the study was carried out, the Cretans ate less meat than other Mediterranean peoples, but more fruit, vegetables and pulses. Olive oil in particular was consumed more abundantly than elsewhere.
