Many of the island’s most beautiful places can only be reached by car – and it is exactly these journeys that become a major part of the travel experience.
Whether along the coast, over wild mountain passes, or through quiet high plateaus: on Crete, the journey itself becomes the destination.
The Northern Coastal Road (VOAK) – Crete’s lifeline
The island’s main transport artery is the so-called VOAK (Northern Road Axis of Crete), which runs almost the entire length of the island. It connects major cities such as Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, and Agios Nikolaos, while repeatedly offering impressive views of the sea.
Despite its importance, it is not just a transport route but also a scenic drive with constantly changing landscapes – from urban stretches to open coastal views.
Coastal roads with postcard views
The drives along the southern coast are particularly impressive. Here, everything becomes quieter, more untouched, and dramatically more rugged than in the north. Narrow roads wind through mountains down to small coves and fishing villages.
Popular routes include:
- the road toward Matala with its famous caves
- the drive to Agia Galini with views over the Libyan Sea
- the mountain route to Preveli with its palm beach and river delta
- the western coastal roads toward Falassarna and Elafonissi
These stretches, in particular, showcase the authentic side of Crete – wild, peaceful, and full of contrasts.
Mountain roads & winding routes into the island’s interior
Away from the coast, numerous scenic roads lead through Crete’s mountainous landscape. These routes are often winding and challenging, but they reward travellers with spectacular views over valleys, olive groves, and the sea in the distance.
Some of the most beautiful mountain drives include:
- the road to the Nida Plateau in the Psiloritis mountains
- the route through the Amari Valley
- the drive to Anogia in the heart of Crete
- the connections between the northern and southern coasts via mountain passes
Here, a different side of the island reveals itself: quiet, authentic, and shaped by small villages and traditional life.
Western Crete – the road to dream beaches
The western part of the island is considered one of the most spectacular regions for scenic routes. Between Chania and the western tip, winding coastal roads, olive groves, and dramatic mountain landscapes alternate constantly.
Some of the best-known roads lead to the beaches of:
- Elafonissi with its pale sand and turquoise waters
- Balos, one of Europe’s most famous lagoons
- Falassarna with its wide sandy shores and sunsets
Many of these roads are narrow and partly steep, but they offer views that are among the most beautiful in the entire Mediterranean.
Eastern Crete – peace and wide open landscapes
The eastern part of the island is less touristic and offers relaxed, often quiet roads. Here, routes pass through rugged landscapes, small harbours, archaeological sites, and remote beaches.
Particularly worthwhile drives include the areas around Sitia, Zakros, and the palm beach of Vai.
